First semester comes to end!

by Craig Williamson

December 21, 2006

It's hard to believe that the first semester has come to an end already. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first semester teaching Criminal Justice at the Center since retiring from the Grundy County Sheriff's Police. Some highlights of the past several weeks have included a field trip and guest speakers. During the past nine weeks, we have had Officer Alicia Weber of Morris Police Dept and Deputy Tanya Paquette of the Grundy County Sheriff's Police speak to the students about females in Law Enforcement. We also had Officer Mike Harvey of the Bolingbrook Police Dept who came to our class and spoke about working in a large department. Another highlight of the semester was to have some members of the Illinois State Police SWAT Team speak to us about SWAT. One of the more interesting items that were brought to us was the actual SWAT response truck. The students were able to go through the truck and see how it functions. Also they brought their robot that they use in situations. Mr. Falbo's class really enjoyed seeing how it responds to different situations. We took a field trip to the Grundy County Jail and the Telecommuncations center. The students were able to see the booking area and cell section. It was agreed that it is better to be on the outside looking in! Some students even witnessed several 911 calls coming into the busy center as there was an accident being reported. It gave the students a realization of just how fast things happen. Each month a student is selected for the Student of the Month award. The following students were rewarded by Director Potts and Asst Director Copes: September.......John Lawless....GSW October.........Shawn Black.....Morris HS November........Lauren Ashley...GSW December........Alicia Flick....Morris HS Also a special award was given to Criminal Justice student Karla Olivares of Minooka High School who assisted the staff by interpreting to the parents of a student that had become ill. Congradulations to all the students for honors that were well deserved!! We look forward to the next semester and we wish all of you a Happy Holiday season!!!
