GAVC To Host Summer Tech Camp

by Leanne Falbo

May 06, 2008

The Computer Maintenance Technology program at GAVC is doing something different this year in our summer camp program. We are including young men! The camps have traditionally only included young women. The idea was to encourage them to pursue careers in the field of Information Technology. Since the camps have been so much fun for the young women, (and since the young men have objected so loudly to being excluded), we have decided to host a "Co-Ed Camp" as well as a "Just Girls Camp" this summer.

Learn about computer components

These camps are an excellent opportunity for young people who are unsure about their level of interest in the wide variety of technology fields available to them. Because of the risk-free environment of the camps, these young people can try out the fields of computer repair, networking, and others, without the anxiety sometimes associated with taking a class in school. The camps are provided free of charge to anyone who attends a Grundy County school or who resides in Grundy County, and entering high school in the fall or who will be sophomores or juniors in the fall. Exceptions can be made.

Learn to solder

Camp activities include: building a computer from parts, learning the basics of soldering and electronics while building a light-seeking robot, which the campers will take with them; story-boarding, designing, and developing a personal web site, which the campers will take with them; hearing first hand from experts in various IT careers; and learning about the exciting IT careers available to young women who choose to pursue them. The "Co-Ed Camp" will run Monday through Friday, June 9 - 13, from 9am until Noon each day. The "Just Girls Camp" will run Monday through Friday, June 16 - 20, from 9am until Noon each day. The camp is free of charge, however REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Those interested in participating in the camps, or learning more about them, should contact Leanne Falbo, CMT Instructor at GAVC.
