3:00-3:50 Monday-Thursday

3:00-3:30 Friday

 

Prerequisites:

A student must successfully complete Building Trades I before entering Building Trades II

 

Course Description:

This course is based around building a single family home.  The students will build a house over a period of two school years.  If the student chooses to take just Building Trades I the student will be a part of building half of the project house.  If the student chooses to take both Building Trades I and Building Trades II the student will be a part of building both halves of the project house.  The course is designed to give the student a foundation in the basic concepts of construction. The course focuses on the fundamental skills needed in the industry and for the core construction classes; industry related vocabulary, scale reading, applying construction calculations, measuring, tools and usage, construction procedures, and industry job descriptions.

 

Course Objectives:

To familiarize the student with the vocabulary and terms used in the construction industry and the program’s classes.

To give the student the basic skills related to the reading, using and interpreting the

different types of scales and drawings used in the construction industry.

To show, explain and apply the basic construction formulas used in the construction

industry.

To explore with the students the different types of jobs available in the industry along

with the pro & cons of each occupation and the student’s career profile.

•To give the students hands on experience in the different construction related occupations.

The instructor has the right to add additional related topics based on the current

industry trends and needs. The changes will be noted in the class schedule included

with this syllabus.

AEC 100 Construction Fundamentals  2 college credits

Grading Plan:

Grade is based on accumulated points in two categories.  60% of grade is Practical Assessment and 40% Class work.

93 A

85 B

77 C

70 D

Below 70 F

 

Required Student Material:

$20 course fee

Listed below is the minimum, basic tool set required:

1.       Soft-sided tool bag large enough to hold personal tools

2.       Carpenter’s nail bag or apron with belt (leather or nylon)

3.       25’ – 0” (minimum) Steel Tape x ¾” (minimum) wide

4.       20 oz. or 16 oz. Claw or Rip hammer

5.       “Swanson” Speed Square – (small) – or equal – should fit in pocket of nail apron above

6.       Cat’s Paw (Nail Puller)

7.       RetractableBlade Utility Knife with extra blades

8.       Chalk Box with extra chalk (blue)

9.       Lineman’s Pliers (side cutters)

10.   1/4” x 6” (blade size) Standard Screwdriver

11.   8” (bit size #2) Phillips Screwdriver

13. Calculator (MUST BE A FEET AND INCH CALCULATOR SUCH AS A CONSTRUCTION MASTER [about $60] OR CRAFTSMAN PROJECT CALCULATOR [about $20])

STUDENTS SHOULD PERMANENTLY IDENTIFY THEIR INDIVIDUAL TOOLS WITH THEIR FULL LAST NAME BEFORE BRINGING THEM TO SCHOOL.

All tools should be name brand and American-made (for longevity).

Students are expected to have the complete set of the above listed tools the first week of class.  Students who do not have their tools will not be permitted to work.  NO OPEN TOED SHOES SUCH AS SANDALS OR FLIP FLOPS MUST HAVE TENNIS SHOES OR BOOTS DUE TO THE HAZARD OF NAILS.

Students are required to have work clothing including some type of rubber over boots because of concrete work and mud.  Don’t forget work gloves and winter liner for hard hat.

Students are provided locks and lockers for their tools and work clothing. STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SECURING THEIR ON TOOLS/CLOTHES IN THEIR LOCKER.

Hard hats and safety glasses meeting the ANSI Z87.1 certification are required and MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES.

TOOLS ARE REQUIRED FIRST WEEK OF CLASS.
