"Role-Playing Demonstrators"
by Jeff Hanley
March 20, 2009
On March 12th over 60 GAVC students from Mr. Williamson's and Mr. Hanley's Criminal Justice Classes participated in a training exercise with the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm Systems (ILEAS) Mobile Field Force (MFF). The students role-played as protestors and rioters; while the Mobile Field Force conducted crowd control and arrest tactics training maneuvers.
The purpose of the Mobile Field Force Team is to supplement or assist any law enforcement agency in need during a crisis or emergency. The team may be called upon to respond to a variety of disasters, emergencies, incidents, or events.
Some of these include:
Site
security for a Pharmaceutical Distribution Operation;
Supplemental law enforcement presence for
a man-made or natural disaster;
Supplemental police presence for a
pre-planned or spontaneous civil disturbance, protest, or riot;
and
Assist State of Illinois law enforcement
personnel to another State affected by a disaster, major emergency
or large-scale event.
After the successful deployment of over 300 law enforcement personnel to Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS) began the process of developing regional groups comprised of certified law enforcement officers that would be able to respond and supplement an affected police jurisdiction during a disaster or emergency. There are several Mobile Field Force Teams across Illinois. The GAVC Criminal Justice students participated with the Region 3 Central Team, which Mr. Hanley is a team commander.
