GAVC Students Appear on NBC!

by Kim Smallwood

March 30, 2009

News travels fast and lately, many people are talking about GAVC's Electricity/Robotics class and their completion of their 3rd annual robot project. Through funding from Exxon-Mobile, the work of 10 students, a budget of $1400, and a 2-week timeframe for building and testing, the Surveillance Robot System was completed. Students applied skills including the fundamentals of electricity, electronics, robotics and programming to finish the final product. Once completed, the students donated the robot to local law enforcement; this year being the Shorewood Police Department. This robot can be operated remotely to see and hear into an unknown situation. A police radio or cell phone can also be strapped to the top of the system to allow safe communications. It can see in the dark for over 40 feet and hear effectively 360 degrees around the robot. Additionally, there is a remote controlled spotlight for quick looks and distractions. The robot is designed to run 1.5 hours or more on a charge.

Word of mouth spread about this project and Electricity/Robotics Instructor, Jim Falbo, received calls from NBC news and CNN. Please click on the video to see footage from both interviews.
