GAVC hosts 3rd Grade Tours

by Deb Eungard

April 29, 2009

On April 23, the staff of GAVC hosted a career day for the third grade students from Coal City. The third grade students had recently celebrated career week at their school so the timing of this tour was very appropriate.
The advanced Early Childhood students paired up with an instructor to coordinate the day's event. They spent a couple weeks discussing age appropriate activities that represented each program to its fullest. The ECE students were then responsible for creating the lesson plan, presenting it to the instructor, and then helping deliver the content on the day of the event.
The day of the tour arrived and each instructor was prepared to deliver an outstanding presentation. Click on the picture to the right to see a slideshow of pictures from each class. The following is a brief description of each program:
Building Trades
: Mr. Humbert and Mr. Misener designed birdhouses for each student to take home and instructed the students on how to properly hammer nails. The birdhouses were a huge success.
Welding
: Mr. Cebulski demonstrated the proper technique for welding. In addition, he talked about the importance of math and let the students try on the welding equipment. The students were amazed with how bright the light was when he welded the metal.
Electricity/Robotics
: Mr. Falbo discussed the program and then demonstrated the different robots. He went on to explain the importance of the robots and how the students created them and then donated them to the local police departments. The students loved driving the robots and marveled at the camera attached.
Health Occupations
: Mrs. Squellati had the community awareness group discuss childhood obesity and the impact it has on young lives. The students completed a relay race of choosing healthy foods. After the race was completed, the students were given a coloring booklet about making healthy choices as well as a food pyramid tattoo.
Criminal Justice
: Mr. Williamson and Mr. Hanley discussed different avenues of law enforcement. They showed the students different aspects of the trade: handcuffs, bulletproof vests, and swat gear. The biggest event that occurred in criminal justice according to the third grade students was the fingerprinting. They were also given GAVC deputy badges.
Computer Applications
: Mrs. Gast lead the students through a discussion on photoshop and then let each of them photoshop their picture onto a Disney character. The students thought that was cool until they learned how the t-shirt press worked and that they were all getting a GAVC t-shirt. The word "awesome" was heard throughout the building.
Early Childhood
: While in early childhood, the students were given GAVC name badges. In addition, Zuleima Ochoa read a story, Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews. The students were told of the importance of reading and learning math facts. After the story, the students created a snack to represent Ten Black Dots.
Computer Maintenance
: Mrs. Falbo passed out different computer parts and had the students guess what they were holding. The presentation concluded with the students putting those components together to build a computer. They learned that if it wasn’t built properly it wouldn’t run. The third grade students were then given a computer stress ball that had GAVC on the screen.
Automotive
: Mr. Kacena went all out with matchbox car races to demonstrate the automotive class. The students selected their own matchbox car and then placed it on a track. The winner from each class was given an automotive T-shirt. Wow! They loved the fact that they were able to keep the cars.

As the students were walking from class to class, you could see the excitement in their eyes and the wonder of what was coming in the next class. The words: awesome, amazing, and cool were just a few words that you could hear in the hallways.
This was truly an enjoyable event for students and staff alike. We look forward to seeing the third grade students as future GAVC students.
