Fire Science

Welcome

by Robert Brown

September 11, 2009

The Fire Science program at GAVC is currently nearing the end of the Orientation module.  The purpose of this module is to familiarize each student with the behavioral expectations of the firefighter in the workplace and assess the students' level of maturity in meeting those expectations.  For most students at this grade level, this process requires considerable input on the part of the instructor to reinforce appropriate behavior and correct inappropriate behavior.  By the end of the module, students are expected to have become sufficiently self-disciplined to safely engage in some practical exercises without undue risk of injury.

The class will then move to the Introduction module during which the students will learn about a variety of career choices within the field of fire protection and the knowledge, skills and abilities which are required.  During this module the class will have the opportunity to learn some basic practical skills associated with each of the various fields of study.  This module is one of three which qualify for college credit through Joliet Junior College.  At the completion of the module students will take a final exam.  Successful completion of the exam will earn the student 3 college credits toward an Associate in Science Degree in Fire Technology from JJC.

During the Operations module the students will learn about the daily operation of a typical fire department.  This includes everything from daily routine activities such as station duties, vehicle operation and maintenance, training, and equipment operation and maintenance, to responding to emergency calls for assistance from the public.  Since this program is conducted at the headquarters station of the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District, students will have the benefit of first-hand observation of an operational fire department.  As a component of the Operations module, students will pursue a course of study in building construction.  The purpose of this component is to familiarize the fire science student with the five general building construction classifications and the hazards associated with each.  At the completion of the building construction component students will take a final exam.  Successful completion of the exam will earn the student another 3 college credits toward an Associate in Science Degree in Fire Technology from JJC.

During the Fire Prevention module the students will learn about the mission and activities of the fire prevention bureau of a typical fire department.  This will include learning about the interpretation and enforcement of fire codes and ordinances, blueprint reading and plan review, systems for automatic fire detection and control, and public education programs.  At the completion of the fire prevention module students will take a final exam.  Successful completion of the exam will earn the student another 3 college credits toward an Associate in Science Degree in Fire Technology from JJC.

The Interview module is designed to give the students first-hand experience with the employment selection process.  Students will take a series of mock entry-level skills assessment tests, written exams, and oral interviews.  Students will be assessed on their knowledge, skill and ability, appearance and dress, behavior, and overall comfort level with the typical assessment instruments utilized by the industry during the firefighter selection process.
