The welding shop is up and rocking with many new 1st year students finding out this stuff takes more brains and skills then once thought and second year students dusting off the cob webs tying to get back the skills from the end of last year.

First year student are currently learning the science and skills behind the OFC or torch cutting process.

Second year students are just getting warmed up with blueprints and SMAW or stick welding.

During  the summer much has happened. 2006 Graduate Brian Larou won the UA Apprentice Welding National Championship. Peter had to beat out all the apprentices at his Local Union 597 with Tyler Johnson also 2006 Graduate coming in a very  close second. Then winning at the state level and regional level to make in to the big show in Ann Arbor Michigan.

Ann Arbor Michigan is the home of the UA Instructors Training Program every August. During this intense Instructor Training the competition was going on for five long extremely hot days and Peter Larou came out on top once again. Congratulations Peter we never had a doubt.

Also Brian Larou 2008 and 2009 State Champion competed in the High school National contest in Kansas City and got 2nd Place only to miss 1st Place by five one hundredths of a point. Brian on the first of three days of competition burned his hand only to be told if he did not receive immediate medical attention he would be disqualified. Even though Brian didn't want or need the medical attention he took the long walk to the onsite nurse during the timed competition to keep himself from getting disqualified. Brian returned with  a bandaged hand and loss of welding time to finish a most respectable second place. Nice job Brian, it must be nice to know that your worst day is better then most everyone in the countries best.
