ATTENDANCE POLICY

GRUNDY AREA VOCATIONAL CENTER

Revised June, 2009

At GAVC, we believe that student attendance is an integral part of the total learning experience. A student learns and experiences something new each day; therefore, it is imperative that a student be in attendance to take advantage of the educational opportunity.

Frequent absence from work is one of the primary causes for employee termination. When hiring Center graduates, employers inquire about the individual's attendance record at school. The primary purpose of the Center is to prepare students for success in the world of work. Since regular attendance is of the utmost importance to future employment, the following Attendance Policy has been established.

TYPES OF ABSENCES

EXCUSED - UNPENALIZED

SCHOOL SPONSORED ACTIVITIES

a. Field Trips

b. Sports Events

c. Assemblies

d. Other Activities Sponsored by Home School

Funerals Excused by Home School.

Hospital Stays or Home Confinement by a Doctor (3) days or more.

Other Absences Approved by the Attendance Officer.

UNEXCUSED - PENALIZED AFTER FIVE (5) SICK/PERSONAL DAYS

It is recognized that there are times that absences are unavoidable. Industry and business deal with this problem by giving their employee's sick and personal days before they deduct pay from the employee's salary. Therefore, following the use of the five (5) sick/personal days within a semester, a student will be penalized two (2) points per day of absence at the end of each quarterly grading period. Parents/Guardians must notify home school of any absence from GAVC to avoid possible discipline from home school.

C. REWARD FOR EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE

The Center also recognizes that many businesses reward employees who have exemplary attendance habits. The following policy is intended to encourage good attendance.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE

Students having Perfect Attendance each quarter will have their grade raised by two (2) points on their quarterly grade report.

ONE OR TWO ABSENCES/TARDIES

Students with 1 or 2 absences per quarter will have their grade raised by 1 point per quarterly report.

Suspensions at the Center will disqualify the student from receiving the Excellent Attendance Rewards.

PROCEDURES

Absences may be penalized either daily or at the end of a grading period provided penalty has the same effect. Make-up will be allowed for classroom work. Since it may not be possible or feasible for the student to make-up shop work, the decision whether to allow such make-up will be determined by the instructor. Consistency and uniform application in shop make-up is essential.

The Attendance Policy will be prepared in three copies upon the start of each school year. One copy will be for the student, one for the parent, and one, signed by student and parent, will be retained in the Center's files.

The Assistant Director will serve as attendance officer to review usual circumstances and to decide upon the application of the policy to situations which may not be specifically covered by the written policy.

The attendance secretary will notify the attendance officer when the 5th day of Category B absence occurs. The attendance officer will write a personal letter to the student's parents/guardians notifying them of their son or daughter's absences and encouraging their cooperation in improving attendance. The attendance secretary will notify the attendance officer after the 10th day of Category B absence occurs. The Dean of Students will contact parents/guardians by phone or email and a 2nd notice letter will be sent. On the 15th day of Category B absence, a certified letter will be mailed to the parent/guardian.

I have read and understand this Attendance Policy.
