Course description: Introduction to Information Technology is designed to prepare students to service and maintain modern computers, peripherals, and portable devices, as well as basic wired and wireless networks. Students will become adept at troubleshooting and diagnosing problems, as well as performing routine maintenance on PCs.  Students will learn to install and replace the major hardware components of the system, maintain and repair those components as well as build a complete system. Various peripherals will be examined. Students will also install, configure and troubleshoot a variety of operating systems, including Windows desktop and network operating systems and Linux desktop operating systems.  Mobile operating systems and OS X will be discussed as well. Client side virtualization and IT security are also covered. This course emphasizes the practical application of theories covered. Hands-on activities, lectures, and student reading/homework provide the platform for learning. Each student will be provided the resources needed to prepare for the Comp TIA A+ certification exam. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Other Materials: Excerpts from other texts deemed useful by the instructor, various websites, and other supplemental materials will be utilized.  Hands-on group lab work will constitute approximately 25% of the class time


Required supplies and materials: Each student must purchase a basic computer technician’s tool kit, available in class. The cost of the tool kit is $30.00. In addition to the cost of the tool kit, there is a $20.00 course fee required of each student.


Grading: Students will be graded based on a combination of factors. These factors include, but are not limited to: homework assignments, labs, chapter exams, skills exams, behavior/attendance and final exam.  These fall into the following categories: Professional Development, Labs & Assignments, Chapter Exams, Skills Exams and Final Exam.

Grading Scale: All GAVC students will be graded on the following scale

Late Work Policy: Students may turn in homework assignments ONE day late for half credit. Homework turned in more than one day late will not be graded.


Skills USA: Students may earn the privilege of participating in the Skills USA student organization. Reginal, State, and National competitions are regularly attended by GAVC students


Internships: Students may also earn the reward of being selected as a GAVC Technical Intern.  Other internships are also available in and around Grundy County. This is an excellent way for students to gain valuable practical experience in the IT field.


Course Objectives: Students will gain a complete, step-by-step approach for learning the fundamentals of supporting and troubleshooting computer hardware and software and will gain an understanding of the core technologies built into Windows Server software.  This course maps fully to CompTIA’s latest A+ exam objectives. A+ certified professionals have mastered the technologies found in today’s extensive and varied IT environments, from mobile to traditional devices and operating systems.
