Course Descriptions

CRIMINAL JUSTICE I                                                                                                               GRADES:  11 - 12       

1 YEAR

Prerequisite: None

Students will be educated in a wide range of criminal justice topics covering Cops, Courts and Corrections.  This is a college-level (dual credit) course covering specific areas, such as policing history; law enforcement; parole; probation; the court system, and private security.  The introductory student will study current legal issues and trends, as well as other areas of the criminal justice system.  Students will be training in a variety of criminal justice skills, including but not limited to: How to conduct a traffic stop, suspect apprehension and detention, interviewing witnesses and suspects, and report writing. The purpose of this introductory course is to provide students with an overall view and understanding of the criminal justice system and lay the foundation for those interested in pursuing a career in the criminal justice field, both public and private.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE II                                                                                                                              GRADE:  12            

1 YEAR

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Criminal Justice I with a “C” or better.

Criminal Justice II will continue to reinforce and enhance the knowledge and practical skills learned from taking Criminal Justice I.  In addition, dual credit from Joliet Junior College includes these areas of study: “White Collar Crime/Criminal Law” and “Drug Use & Abuse in the Criminal Justice System.”  Students will be trained in a number of law enforcement related skills, including but not limited to: DUI procedures, how to conduct a standardized field sobriety test, high risk/felony traffic stops, courtroom procedures, participate in a mock trial, and how to prepare for and perform in an oral interview. Qualifying students may also be provided the opportunity to participate in a “job-shadowing” program with a local law enforcement agency by demonstrating the necessary knowledge and desire to succeed in the criminal justice field.
